Agriculture Re-Emerges from the Shadows

Is the farming world finally managing to find its way out of the abyss of pessimism in which it has found itself for the last fifteen years? The hike in the prices of agricultural raw materials is restoring confidence to European farmers. The price of wheat has almost doubled in one year; maize has gone up by 52% and soya by 40%. Farmers’ income had already increased by 17% in 2006. This all leads us to believe that this bright start is set to last because the increase in (the price of) agricultural raw materials seems to be based more on structural factors than economic grounds.
Furthermore, world demographic pressure and strong ethanol production in the United States have reduced cereal stocks, which are at a 13- and 12-year low for maize and wheat respectively (...)
